RBGG congratulates Monterey County chief Public Defender Jim Egar who will be honored as Defender of the Year by the California Public Defenders’ Association at the group’s annual meeting in May.  According to the PDA, Jim is being honored for his work toward “obtaining adequate medical care and humane treatment for inmates in custody in Monterey County, as well as your work on behalf of indigent defendants.”

Jim is co-counsel with RBGG and the ACLU in an ongoing case that seeks to improve medical and mental health care at the Monterey County jail.  An article in the Monterey County Herald on March 31, 2014 profiles Jim and describes the case in more detail, “Public defender Jim Egar honored as jail lawsuit proceeds“.
