Rosen Bien Galvan & Grunfeld announced today that Jeffrey L. Bornstein, one of California’s leading white collar criminal defense and government enforcement lawyers, has joined the firm as a partner. Bornstein, who has been a partner of K&L Gates in San Francisco since 2005, previously served for nearly two decades in the criminal and civil divisions of the San Francisco U.S. Attorney’s Office.

“We are tremendously excited to have Jeff join us to anchor the firm’s government enforcement practice,” said Michael Bien, Managing Partner of RBGG. “He is a superb trial lawyer and widely viewed by his peers as one of the top white collar criminal defense lawyers in California.”

Bornstein is a highly experienced trial lawyer in both civil and criminal cases. He has tried more than 35 jury and non-jury trials in state and federal courts. He has been involved in many high-profile cases including representing a key person in the Galleon insider trading case, several individuals in connection with the San Bruno gas pipeline accident, and Solyndra. Bornstein also served as co-lead counsel with RBGG’s Michael Bien in the 2013 trial of Coleman v. Brown where RBGG represents a class of the more than 30,000 men and women in California’s prison system with serious mental illness.

“It’s exciting to have the opportunity to bring my practice to a firm like RBGG that litigates cases so hard and so effectively from a small firm platform” said Bornstein. “It was an incredible experience for me to serve as co-counsel with Mike in the Coleman trial in 2013 and to assist in the earlier prison overcrowding proceedings before the Three Judge Court in 2009.“

In Coleman, after plaintiffs prevailed at trial, the State of California instituted reforms to policies and practices regarding the use of force against prisoners with mental illness, as well as the overuse and misuse of solitary confinement.

“I’m looking forward to increasing my work in civil rights and on behalf of plaintiffs, while expanding the scope of the firm’s white collar criminal defense, government enforcement, and commercial litigation practice,” Bornstein added. “I am very pleased to be joining such an exceptional group of trial and appellate lawyers at RBGG.”
